What Does Deck & Fence Cleaning Involve?
Deck and fence cleaning targets suitable dirt and organic buildup on timber or composite surfaces. We review the material, existing finish and condition before choosing a method. Routine cleaning, stripping old stain, sanding and refinishing have different scopes; your proposal makes those distinctions clear.
Your Quote Can Include
- Material, coating and condition assessment
- Cleaning of the agreed deck or fence surfaces
- Method chosen to limit surface damage
- Care around hardware, planting and adjoining walls
- Clear scope for any separate preparation or restoration
Wood Does Not Benefit from Maximum Pressure
Soft timber can be furred or gouged when a concentrated jet is used too close. Painted and stained surfaces can also lose an already weakened coating. Cleaning begins with an assessment of the wood and finish, rather than a promise to blast everything back to new.
Weathered grey timber is not necessarily dirty, and a clean deck may still show age and colour variation. If your goal is refinishing, discuss the complete preparation process with the contractor doing that work. Washing is one stage, not the whole restoration.
Composite Decking Has Its Own Instructions
Composite boards differ in their cap layers, profiles and manufacturer requirements. Product details help determine which cleaners and methods are appropriate. Marks from grease, rust or tannins may need separate assessment.
We take account of board gaps, rails, fasteners and nearby walls. A surface can have defects that cleaning will not correct. Loose boards and damaged fixings should be handled before the cleaning visit where they affect access or safety.

Fence Cleaning Requires Access on the Agreed Sides
A fence has panels, posts and often two very different exposures. One side may be shaded and damp while the other is open to sun. Specify which side or sides you want cleaned and whether access involves another property.
Gardens, climbing plants, delicate paint and metal hardware affect the scope. We avoid assuming neighbour access or adding another fence face without agreement. Boundary and access arrangements are the customer’s responsibility to confirm.
Aftercare and Drying
Allow the surface to dry and follow any agreed aftercare. If staining or sealing is planned, the product and installer determine the required preparation and moisture conditions. A same-day clean-and-coat promise is not appropriate for every deck.
Keep leaf piles and wet mats from remaining on the boards for long periods. Monitor slippery areas and drainage around deck supports. Regular surface care complements, but does not replace, checks for rot and structural condition.
Choose Care That Fits the Finish
An older timber deck, a newer composite board and a painted fence do not need the same treatment. Tell us about the finish, previous cleaning and any slippery or soft areas. Include rails, stairs and the fence sides you want assessed. A useful quote explains the cleaning that is appropriate now and the drying or repair steps needed before any separately arranged coating work.
Shawnigan Lake deck cleaning can involve shade and lake-adjacent drainage; Cobble Hill fence washing may cover longer runs and both sides. In Maple Bay or North Saanich, elevated decks and view rails need an access review. Suitable deck washing has a $0.40–$0.70 per-square-foot guide with a $200 minimum. Fence length, height, sides and finish are quoted separately.
